Why We Made GeoSwap Free (And How We'll Stay That Way)
Cloudflare Workers cost fractions of a cent per request. Geolocation data is a free CDN header. Geo-targeting is a commodity — here's why we don't charge for it and how our business model works.

Before we built GeoSwap, we were on the other side of the checkout page. We were the ones staring at a $99/month invoice for a tool that checks an IP address and runs an if-statement. We felt that specific kind of frustration — the one where you know something should cost almost nothing, but every option on the market charges like it's rocket science.
So we built the thing we wished existed. And we made it free. Not “free to start.” Not “free up to 1,000 pageviews.” Free. All of it. Forever.
We saw the pain up close
We're engineers. We've spent years building products, and along the way we've talked to thousands of small and medium businesses. The pattern is always the same: a team with international traffic discovers they need geo-targeting, shops for a tool, sees the price tags — $29, $99, $349 a month — and quietly decides it's not worth it.
That $50/month doesn't sound like much in isolation. But stack it on top of your hosting, your email tool, your analytics, your CMS, your form builder, your error tracker, your uptime monitor — and suddenly you're bleeding a thousand dollars a month in SaaS fees before you've written a single line of your own product.
The worst part? The tools that do charge often punish you for growing. Take Geo Targetly, the biggest name in this space. Their plans come with hard pageview quotas. When you hit the limit, they give you a 2-day grace period. Then your geo-targeting just… stops. Your redirects stop. Your localized content disappears. Right when your traffic is growing — the exact moment you need the tool most — it shuts off and asks for more money.
That felt wrong to us. So we decided to do something about it.
Why we can actually afford this
Here's the thing nobody in this industry talks about: the underlying technology is absurdly cheap to run.
GeoSwap runs on Cloudflare Workers. Every request executes at the edge — in 300+ data centers around the world — with geolocation data included for free in every request header. No MaxMind license. No database lookups. No origin servers to scale.
The math is simple:
- Cloudflare Workers cost $0.30 per million requests after the first 10 million (which are free). That's $0.0000003 per redirect.
- Geolocation — country, region, city — is a free header on every Cloudflare request. Zero additional cost.
- There are no origin servers. Geo redirects happen entirely at the edge. Nothing to scale, nothing to maintain.
The marginal cost of adding one more user is fractions of a penny. Not fractions of a dollar — fractions of a penny. The cost of building and running software has dropped dramatically, and we think pricing should reflect that.
When someone charges you $349/month for something that costs them $0.0003 to serve, that's not a pricing model. That's a toll booth.
Our commitment — in plain language
PostHog has this line we love: “How you price is who you are.” We think about that a lot. Our identity is free. It's not a growth hack. It's not a temporary strategy. It's who we are.
We'd rather have a million free users than a thousand paying ones. That's not a platitude — it's our actual business model.
So here's the commitment, with no weasel words:
- No pageview limits. Not now, not ever. Your traffic can 10x overnight and nothing changes.
- No credit card required. We will never gate signup behind payment info.
- No “free trial” that expires. There is no clock ticking.
- No feature paywalls on core tools. Geo redirects, content personalization, geo smart links — all free, all features, all the time.
- No data selling. We don't sell your visitor data. We don't inject ads. Your traffic is yours.
We know the pattern. A tool launches as free, builds a user base, then slowly starts paywalling features. First it's “advanced analytics.” Then it's “custom rules.” Then it's “more than 5 redirects.” Before you know it, the free tier is a demo and the real product costs $49/month.
We won't do this. The core geo-targeting tools are free today and they will be free in five years. This is a promise, not a marketing angle.
What we will charge for (someday)
We believe in transparency, so here's the full picture. There are things we'll eventually offer as paid additions:
- Priority support — guaranteed response times when you need help fast.
- SLAs and uptime guarantees — contractual commitments for enterprise teams.
- Team features — role-based access, audit logs, and collaboration tools for larger organizations.
Notice what's not on that list: redirects, content rules, smart links, analytics, geolocation — none of the core tools. Those stay free. The things we'll charge for are things that cost us real human time to deliver (support, compliance, account management). The things that cost us fractions of a penny to run? Those are free.
This is the hill we'll die on
We started GeoSwap because we believe the cost of software has dropped far enough that entire categories of tools should be free. See our pricing page for the proof. Geo-targeting is one of them. The technology is a solved problem. The infrastructure costs almost nothing. The only reason it's been expensive is because nobody had an incentive to make it free.
Now someone does. And we're not going back.
Every business with international traffic deserves geo-targeting. Not just the ones that can afford another monthly subscription. Start exploring with our free Geo Browse and IP lookup tools — no signup required.
